WordDigest- A new look

“I was reading a dictionary. I thought it was a poem about everything” said Steven Wright, an award winning actor and writer. Having this thing for dictionaries, I totally agree with Steven and I am sure many of you will too. My tryst with dictionaries began way back in my school days when Miss Gomes would insist on our carrying a dictionary to class. Those were the days. But what joy! Here at Global Delight I get to work with dictionaries again! :) Yup, I am referring to WordDigest, the English Dictionary, Thesaurus and Spell Checker app for the iPhone/iPod touch. All of you have loved this app, now you have more reasons to love it. WordDigest v1.2 is out  with a sleeker and nicer UI and additional features. Have a look at what the UI looks like now:

From the screenshots you may have guessed what the new features might be. Lemme list them down:

# Words of the day: Five random words appear as you start the application. Click on any one of them and their meaning appears. You can go back to the Words of the Day by clicking on the Featured tab in the menu bar.

# Crossword and Anagram Solver: Crossword enthusiasts are going to love this feature. Type in the answer pattern and a list of probable solutions will appear.

# Tab customization: With this feature you can choose to re-arrange the menu items thus giving you a lot more flexibility.

# Pull up Menu button: When you use the Dictionary feature, on selecting a word, you will notice a pull up menu button appearing. Once chosen you have an option of favoriting the word, send the word and its meaning via mail, make notes if any or use the web to know more about that word.

# Notes: An interesting feature of the new version is the ability to make notes against any word. You can thus note anything interesting that you may have come across for that word.

# Mail: Enables you to instantly send the meaning of a word across via email.

What’s up?

Phew! What a week this has been. With Wisen Up out on the App Store, it’s been one roller-coaster ride. It’s really nice to see this personality quiz cum infotainment app picking up steadily. Yeah, and we owe it all to you, of course. Do show us your support by downloading the app, rating it and giving us your feedback, so that we can work on improving it. There are some great reviews on Wisen Up, which I shall cover in my next post. This post is mainly dedicated to tell you what we have been upto and what’s up. :)

First, what we have been upto. Of late, there have been some problems faced by some of our users of Voila Mac screen capture tool after updating to the latest version 2.1. Also, we have been testing Voila on Snow Leopard and also in the OS upgrade scenarios. Well the good news is, in most of the cases we have been able to identify the issues, a big thanks to our Customers who have been cooperative in troubleshooting. The bug fix is in progress and hopefully in the next few weeks we should have an update ready for release. So go ahead, continue using your Voila, bug-free (pun totally intended ;) ) and send us some of your creations. We would love to showcase them on our site and on Flickr.

Just recently I downloaded some great High Quality videos using Web2 Delight. To make things even better, we have slashed the price of Web2 Delight to $9.95! Isn’t that just fab? It’s amazing how you can download your favorite videos from any video sharing sites from one location. I have created my own collection of some of my favorite videos using the organizer in the application.

We have released a new version of WordDigest, an English dictionary, thesaurus and spell checker app for your iPhone and iPod touch. This useful reference app has got a facelift with new interface along with some new features too. You can now add quick notes to the words, solve Crosswords and Anagrams on the fly, and learn few new words everyday. WordDigest - A dictionary combo for iPhone, iPod touch

So here I am sitting in my cubicle minding my own business when I spot a guy from the marketing team heading towards me. Yup, the author of the second post below this one, if you’d like to have a face to picturize. Now this can’t be good, I think to myself, and before I could even register another thought he comes up to me and says “Could you write something about WordDigest for our blog?” That effectively got my mood from “Yeah! It’s the weekend!” to a complete void. I’ve heard of writers’ block but let me tell you it also affects people like me who well, don’t essentially write for a living. So, after unsuccessfully scribbling around for a while, I pick up an iPod touch and start using WordDigest with the hope that the very product we worked so hard on to bring to life would now inspire me to write a few words about it. 

I look up ‘digest’ and of all the information about the word presented to me, this is what catches my eye,

digest (n) ’something that is compiled (as into a single book or file)’

And a digest of words is exactly what we wanted to accomplish in creating WordDigest, which in short, is an application that combines the functionality of a Dictionary, Thesaurus and a Spell Checker all into one package. Now that’s a lot of features for one application and having them all while still keeping the user interface clean, simple and intuitive was quite a challenge. We really had to head back to the drawing board time and again to get things just right. Another thing that managed to give us sleepless nights was managing the size of the application. Going from a hysterical “70MB!!! You gotta be kidding me.” to a more sedate “18MB, That’s acceptable.” was quite a ride.

Getting into the features, all the words in the dictionary and thesaurus are hyperlinked and I’ve realized it’s fun to just randomly follow a trail of words not knowing when one that you haven’t heard of appears before you and takes you by surprise. If you find it interesting, just mark it as a favorite and move on. If you are not sure how a word is spelled, just trust the wisdom of Spell Check to give you the right spelling along with suggestions, all linked back to the dictionary for easy reference. You can even look up words on Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Answers.com and you’ll see that the search results are optimized so that you don’t have to scroll around, pinch and zoom to really find what you are looking for.

The process of creating this application, right from deciding what features we wanted, then investigating how best they could be implemented to the actual release was a valuable learning process for the whole team and lots of fun.
