Voila v3.1.1- With New Email Client Support, Copy URL and Fixes

November 2nd, 2011

Voila v3.1.1 is finally out and is available on the Mac App Store or the Online Store for just $29.99! This is a free update to the existing users of Voila v3.x. This update not only features a few cool additions that will make your Voila experience even more fantastic, but also a fix, although temporary, to the 3ivx issue.

In one of our previous posts entitled, The Lion Video-recording Crash and the Fix , we spoke at length of how the legacy code, 3ivxVideoCodec present in QuickTime has a few compatibility issues with Mac OS X Lion, causing applications that use the QuickTime framework for screen-recording, to crash. In this update, while we still wait the creators of the 3ivx to provide a fix, we have gone ahead and provided an Error message that comes up when you launch the app. This message will inform you about the presence of the 3ivx component and how to move it for uninterrupted screen-recording on your Mac OS Lion with Voila.

New Email Clients:

In this update we have also provided support to more email clients such as Outlook, Sparrow and Sparrow Lite along with Apple Mail and Entourage. Thus you can now enjoy the flexibility of sharing your Voila captures directly from within the app, through an email client of your choice. You can set it in the Preferences tab of the app. With this, Voila allows you to create, enhance, organize and share your entire work without even leaving the app!

Copy URL:

Another interesting addition and the most requested feature, was the ability to obtain the URL after a file has been uploaded via FTP, SFTP, Flickr or YouTube. Earlier, the URL of only the last uploaded file was copied to the Clipboard, which would be lost the minute some other matter was placed there. Thus now Voila saves the URL for each file uploaded on the FTP/SFTP server, Flickr or YouTube in the Info panel of the app. Thus you can copy the URL and paste/embed it in other places.

With this update we have been able to take Voila a step ahead as a one-stop shop for all your screen capturing, editing and sharing needs. Most of the updates that we provide is a result of users’ feedback and this has helped us in improving the app, so that we can make it more useful to you.

On the Mac App Store:

As we have pointed it out earlier, the Mac App Store is a great platform for listing of apps both for the developers as well as the users. There are usually two thinking processes that happen here. You decide to buy an app either because you have been looking for something like it or you heard/read about it from somewhere. In both the cases, the user reviews on the Mac App Store always adds on to the credibility of the app. But there the review process is not two-way. Most of the developers have the same grouch. There is absolutely no opportunity to clarify a particular user’s question or complaint on the Mac App Store! Most of these complaints could arise from either a genuine issue or the user has not understood the functionality of the app. In both cases, users give it a low rating without a proper explanation. This adversely affects the ranking of an otherwise top-rated app, which could have been a life-saving solution for a genuine user.

Since we developers cannot ask for more details about your query on the Mac App Store, you could try approaching us directly. The contact information is provided on the Mac App Store for you to get in touch with us. Most of us also have an active forum and a support contact. So do make use of these tools.

This reminds me of the often used Spider-Man quote, “With Great Power comes Great Responsibility.” Use it wisely.

The Lion Video-recording Crash and the Fix

September 19th, 2011

Does Voila crash while recording a video off your desktop? You might want to take a look at that 3ivx component.

Since the past few days we have been baffled by several reports that Voila crashed during a screen recording session. Looking further into this issue, we found that this was only faced  by Lion users. Not sure what we were supposed to look for, but we finally zeroed in on the culprit with the help of one of our users, Bernie Smith. The 3ivxVideoCodec present in QuickTime has a few compatibility issues with Mac OS X Lion.

Result: The app crashes either on launch, during a screen-recording session, or while accessing the video files.

So what is this 3ivx component? What does it do and why is it needed in Voila?

3ivx is a video codec suite that allows the creation of MPEG-4 compliant data streams. It has been designed around a need for decreased processing power for use mainly in embedded systems. 3ivx provides plugins and filters that allow the MPEG-4 data stream to be wrapped by the Microsoft ASF and AVI transports, as well as Apple’s QuickTime transport. It also allows the creation of elementary MP4 data streams and provides an audio codec for creation of AAC audio streams. In the case of Voila, since it uses the QuickTime framework for screen-recording, this component is creating an issue with screen-recording on Voila. Other screen-recording applications have also reported occurrences of the same.

What is the solution for this?

The makers of the 3ivx codec are currently working on an update. They have covered the same on their forum. Until then, to temporarily fix this issue, you could search for this component “/Library/QuickTime/3ivxVideoCodec.component“. You can then compress and delete it from this location. You can save it in another location if you wish to.

This should help in preventing further crashes while recording a video off your screen. Meanwhile we are already working on our next update to Voila, which has some interesting new additions. So hopefully if the Lion compatible version of 3ivx is released we would be able to provide a permanent fix to this issue in this update.

You can read more on this on the Apple Discussion Forum and from our Forum.

Voila and Boom now Roars with Mac OS X Lion too!

July 20th, 2011

The sweetest news since the announcement of Mac OS 10.7 a.k.a Lion right? Since the release of the Lion beta, we have a had quite a number of enthusiastic users who went ahead and tried out Voila and Boom on it. But as I had covered in a previous post on the same subject, there were a few OS related issues due to which a few features did not work as designed in Voila. This was experienced by other similar apps too. Well the good news now is that those issues have been fixed and we have a few more enhancements in the latest version. Voila v3.1 will feature the following enhancements:

– Completely compatible with Mac OS X Lion

- Option to export web pages into a PDF format from the Voila Browser

- Users can work on and edit their screenshots in the Full Screen mode (Feature available only on Mac OS X Lion)

- Choice of JPEG or H.264 type compression for Screen Recording (Feature available only on Mac OS X Lion)

With Boom, there really wasn’t much to work on since it was pretty much compatible with Lion already. However, there’s some new stuff being cooked and I would let you know some time soon!

That said, we are also running Voila and Boom at a special discount till end of July so that all of you who still haven’t joined in on the coolest bandwagon yet, can do it now. For a limited period, Voila Mac Screen Capture tool will be available for $19.99 (Originally $29.99) both on the Mac App Store or the Global Delight Online Store.

You could also grab your copies of Boom Volume Booster and Equalizer App for just $6.99 (Originally $8.99) for a limited period on the Mac App Store or the Global Delight Online Store.
