Troubleshooting: Camera Plus Pro and Facebook

October 13th, 2012

In recent versions of Camera Plus Pro we’ve taken steps to improve sharing. One of the more significant changes we’ve made is the move to Facebook single sign on. This integration allows us to be included in things like the Facebook App Center and allows you, our favorite iPhoneographers, to post to Facebook quicker and more reliably.

However, a small number of CPPers have reportedly had some trouble with this new feature. We had previously been using a different method to connect to Facebook and it appears that somewhere along the lines things got “stuck” for some of you guys and gals.

We’d like to first off say “Sorry about that” for those of you who are, or have experienced this issue. The fix to this is actually relatively simple.

In Camera Plus Pro go to “Settings” > “Share” and then sign out of Facebook and quit the app.

Then on the Facebook website (via a desktop computer), go to “Account Settings” on the top right. From there choose “Apps” from the left hand column. Here you will see a list of Apps allowed to authorize your Facebook account.

If you click the “X” to the right of the listing for Camera Plus Pro you will be presented with the option to de-authorize CPP from using your account.

Click “Remove”  but be careful not to check the checkbox to delete your Camera Plus Pro activity, as this will remove your photos from Facebook.

Once this is complete, open up Camera Plus Pro on your iPhone or iPod and go back to “Settings” >”Share” and sign into Facebook. This should then kick you to the Facebook App on your device to properly re-authorize you once and for all and things should start working better than ever.

If you have any further questions or issues you can reach out to us and get help on our Support forums.

Cheers and happy shooting!

Rolling Shutter in iPhone

August 18th, 2011

cpp_icon_57x57

Why do you see the individual blades of an airplane even though it is rotating at a very high speed? It is because iPhone’s camera lens is based on ‘rolling shutter’.

Rolling shutter (also known as line scan) is a method of image acquisition in which each frame is recorded not from a snapshot of a single point in time, but rather by scanning across the frame either vertically or horizontally. In other words, not all parts of the image are recorded at exactly the same time, even though the whole frame is displayed at the same time during playback. (Source: Wikipedia)

Thus, the resulting effect is that you can see the individual blades of the airplane when you record using devices using rolling shutter.

Blades of an Airplane (Recorded using Camera Plus Pro)

There isn’t any physical shutter in an iPhone or similar recording devices. It is just called that as a convention (something similar to a movie camera having a shutter moving across frames). In digital video, the rolling shutter effect is the result of the way a CMOS sensor is read. CMOS sensor doesn’t captures the entire frame at one go but instead information is read line by line of each frame, i.e. top to bottom. The video frame rate (fps) also depends on the quality of recording and also if the device is handheld.

CMOS sensors capable of higher frame rates than 30 frames per second (and not just through repeating frames) will exhibit less rolling shutter effect because their sensors have been designed to read faster. This limitation is removed in high-end DSLR cameras.

The best of the best will be offered up in a poll, featured here on this blog.
